Los Angeles parish launches 'CarolWorks' competition for choral composers

[Episcopal Life] Saint James' Church, Los Angeles, has announced the inauguration of "CarolWorks," a national competition to encourage American composers under the age of 35 to create a choral composition for the season of Advent.

A "carol" for SATB choir (with or without organ accompaniment) on an Advent text of the composer's choice (in English or Latin) is being sought. A panel of judges, including composers Morten Lauridsen of the University of Southern California and Byron Adams of the University of California at Riverside, and St. James' music director, James Buonemani, will select a winning carol to receive a premiere performance by the Choir of St. James' at an Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols on December 13, 2009. A cash award of $3,500 is generously provided by the Ahmanson Foundation.

Submission deadline is March 31, 2009. For an entry form and detailed instructions, visit the St. James website and click on CarolWorks under the Great Music tab; or email CarolWorks@SaintJamesLA.org.
