Job Description

The Center for Mission Leadership is engaged in building networks and providing resources and tools for the creative, pastoral and prophetic leadership in the church and beyond.  In addition to Young Adults its focus areas include Lay and Ordained Ministries, Church Deployment, Mission Personnel, Chaplaincies, Women’s Ministries and Theological Education.
 
The Center for Mission Leadership is looking for an Associate Program Officer: Young Adult Ministry and Leadership Development. The position reports directly to the Program Officer for Young Adult Ministries in collaboration with the Mission Leadership Center Director.
 
In collaboration with the Program Officer for Young Adult Ministry, this position is responsible for the development and provision of resources, programs and networks that focus specifically on young adults.   Consultation and resource preparation to help dioceses and local communities of faith strengthen their effectiveness with young adults will be its essential work.  The successful candidate will have a special awareness of the relationship between spirituality and changing social context in the church and in the world today. 

This position is based in Seattle, WA and travel is estimated at 25%-50%. Estimated start date is Fall, 2008


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Develop leadership resources and educational tools and curricula using a wide variety of technologies:  the arts, film, on line streaming etc. 
  • Identify current issues and engage young adults in their contexts in gaining for the church an understanding of their needs and hopes and will assist in developing a strategy for responding to those needs.
  • Interpret for the wider church the major issues of concern for young adults today.
  • Assist in building a church wide network for young adults and providing the tools for interaction in a variety of ways. This work includes the Episcopal Church as well as globally in the Anglican Communion.
  • Collaborate with the Program Officer for Young Adult Ministry in identifying and nurturing short and long term internships.
  • Collaborate with local colleagues and Church Center staff, including the Pastoral Leadership Search Effort (PLSE) in creating joint ministry projects for young adults.
  • Engage with campus ministries and college chaplains.
  • Collaborate with Pastoral Leadership Search Effort (PLSE) in creating resources on vocational discernment and ministry development.
  • Identify leaders and support mentor programs for young adults

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS

  • BA and/or relevant experience in young adult work, leadership development, education or related fields
  • Capacity to articulate the intersection between faith and world concerns and the discernment of faith in daily life.  
  • Familiarity with on line communication and web resource development
  • Second language preferred but not required
  • Ability in group facilitation and teaching as well as writing skills.
  • Ability to lead in program design and implementation for young adults.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of the Structure of the Episcopal Church

Work Environment

This position is based in Seattle, WA and travel is estimated at 25%-50%.
