Job Description
The Center for Mission Leadership is engaged in building networks and providing resources and tools for the creative, pastoral and prophetic leadership in the church and beyond. In addition to lay ministry and leadership, the Center’s focus areas include Young Adults, Ordained Ministry, Women’s Ministries, chaplaincies, Mission Personnel, and Theological EducationThe Center for Mission Leadership is looking for a Program Officer for Discipleship and Leadership: Lay/Baptismal Ministry.
Within the Mission Leadership Center, this position is responsible for the development and provision of resources and programs that strengthen lay ministry, vocation and leadership. S/He will design and implement conferences, consultations and resources that focus on lay ministry and leadership which calls the church to its vocation of living the Gospel mandate in the world. Particular emphasis on women, young people, and vocational discernment for lay people. Relationship building with networks, organizations and institutions that are giving attention to the ministry and leadership of the laity which includes both individual and parish vocation, community organizing, and an understanding of baptism as a call to discipleship.
This position is based in Omaha, NE and travel is estimated at 20%-25%. Estimated start date is Fall, 2008
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Serve as liaison to emerging networks supporting lay ministry—Ministry in Daily Life, Episcopal Partnership for Faithfulness in Daily Life, CEPVA, etc.
- Collaborate with the Program Officer for Ordained Ministry in joint projects.
- Assist in the development and support of theological education resources and models (EFM, Continuing Ed, developing new curricula etc.)
- Support and build a network to publicize work in leadership and lay ministry.
- Work with Jubilee Officer and others in assisting parishes and congregations in discerning their charism for ministry
- Along with the Program Officer for Ordained Ministry, serve as a liaison to the Standing Commission on Ministry Development
- Follow up on General Convention resolutions as required.
- Identify, support and develop models for leadership development and community organizing in the church and beyond.
- Website work and maintenance.
- Facilitate leadership in congregations and dioceses--many approaches -shared with Evangelism and Congregational Life Center and other program units of the Center.
- Collaborative work in total ministry.
- Follow up on lay employee surveys done by the Church Pension Group.

- Ability to articulate theology of lay ministry as the work of discipleship in the world
- Understanding of lay ministry as individual and corporate vocation for the church
- Advanced degree preferred
- Second language preferred
- Thorough knowledge of The Episcopal Church.
